Maritime Security Update – Fishing Vessel Hijacked in Somalia

Two recent incidents involving attacks on fishing vessels off the coast of Somalia, highlighted the underlying tensions in the country surrounding Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activity. The issue of IUU is recognised as the precursor that led to the emergence of Somali Piracy and the taking of commercial vessels and crews for ransom. In this report, we look at the ramifications for the region from IUU and the potential for a return to piracy against merchant vessels transiting the Indian Ocean region. Download the full report.
