Hostile Environment and Awareness Training (HEAT) Course
Neptune P2P Group’s Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) course is for Governments, NGOs, business travellers, and employees (at all levels) traveling to unfamiliar, semi-permissive, and hostile locations. It is for individuals to better understand the environment they may travel to and work in, how to maintain a low-profile presence, and most importantly, stay SAFE. The course encompasses security and situation awareness and is designed to prepare individuals to deal with difficult and unforeseen situations abroad. HEAT provides the duty of care for travelling employees, no matter what the nature of their business is.

- Phase 1 consists of the following theoretical modules based on the SAFE framework:
- Module 1. Travel Safely prepares participants for travel to high-risk areas, covering safe transit from home to destination, local movement, and situational awareness throughout.
- Module 2. Travel Risk Management prepares participants for routine travel in high-risk areas, focusing on journey planning, transitioning between locations safely, and managing risks in semi-permissive or hostile environments.
- Module 3. Lifesaving First Aid educates participants to manage trauma, keeping casualties alive until the emergency services arrive.
- Module 4. Countering Terrorism helps participants manage and reduce risk from violent extremism by understanding terrorism, strategy and learning from it, as well as responding to incidents such as IEDs and active shooter attacks.
- Module 5. Kidnap and Hostage Situations equips participants to reduce the risk of being kidnapped through increased situation awareness, techniques in responding effectively to a hostage situation, and understanding basic negotiation should you be the line-manager on speed-dial of a kidnapped member of staff.
- Module 6. Crisis Management prepares staff—especially managers—to respond effectively to security incidents, providing strategies for handling crises and supporting those in the field when contingency plans fail.
- Phase 2 involves HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) practical demonstrations and scenario-based assessments. These exercises integrate the content covered in Phase 1 and are tailored to align with the specific requirements of the client.

The HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) course is delivered in two integrated phases, beginning with the SAFE (Security Awareness in Foreign Environments) course as the theoretical foundation. SAFE includes the following modules: Travel Safely, Travel Risk Management, Lifesaving First Aid, Countering Terrorism, Kidnap and Hostage Situations, and Crisis Management. These modules are delivered through flexible formats, including in-person training at locations in the UK, Dubai, or client premises; live virtual sessions via Microsoft Teams; and fully automated, self-paced online learning accessible 24/7.
The second phase, the HEAT course, builds on this theoretical foundation with practical demonstrations and scenario-based assessments that encompass all topics covered in the SAFE course. These immersive in-person exercises are designed to reinforce learning through hands-on application in realistic environments. Our experienced instructors plan and deliver each session to meet the specific operational needs, location, and timeframe of the client. Training can be held at dedicated venues in the UK and Dubai or at a client’s preferred site. Both phases are fully adaptable, with bespoke training packages available on request via the contact form.
Duration: 3 Days. The basic course is 3 days. Corporate participants can elect to extend to 5 days to increase the practical scenarios.

The course aims to help participants become more confident in identifying potentially dangerous situations and be able to immediately assess how avoid or react and respond. The modules are theoretical and practical and include travel planning and travel risk management, lifesaving medical skills, avoiding terrorism, avoiding and dealing with a hostage situation, and incident/crisis management.
