Comment. If confirmed, this is the first maritime security incident reported in the Togo EEZ since 2020. Some open-source reports suggest that the vessel was boarded during the incident; however, we are currently unable to verify whether this was indeed the case. The vessel has been identified as the Malta-flagged products tanker, ENDO PONENTE. We will provide further updates if additional information becomes available.
Assessment. The report from MDAT-GOG indicating that the crew is safe suggests that the incident is over. It is unclear at this stage whether the vessel was boarded, but it is possible, and that on finding the crew were located in the ship’s citadel, the pirates were unable to take control of the vessel and left the scene. Ships are reminded to remain vigilant when operating in the area and to comply with the guidance given in the BMP-Maritime Security and consider the use of an Armed Security Team to mitigate some of the threats in the area.
