Global Security Risk Map – Q3 2024

Human migration events in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas continue unabated and rescue operations to assist overloaded or in some instances, capsized boats have placed enormous strain on regional coastguard and rescue services, there is a persistent risk that passing commercial shipping may find themselves involved in such events.

On land, driven by a combination of political instability, armed conflict, civil unrest, health and environmental factors, global insecurity has risen in several key regions, increasing the level of risk faced by travellers or businesses trading in those areas.  In West Africa, countries such as Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have seen a significant increase in terrorist violence, while in Central Africa, the World Health Organisation declared a health emergency as an outbreak of a new strain of the highly contagious disease Monkey Pox (now known as Mpox) threatens to spread across Burundi, Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Civil unrest in Kenya, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea has caused instability in those countries. Elsewhere, the conflicts in Ukraine and between Israel and Iranian proxies have the potential to threaten global security on a broader scale. Also, with the November US Elections looming, notwithstanding two assassination attempts against ex-President Trump, the close contest increases the risk of civil unrest in the United States.
