Monthly Maritime Security Incident Report July 2025

Out of Africa! Maritime security events significantly increased during July. UAV and USV attacks on Ports in Ukraine and Russia; GPS Spoofing in the Arabian Gulf and a vessel intercepted in the Strait of Hormuz; 2 x vessels sank by Houthis; pirate activity warning in the Gulf of Guinea; and guards killed on board a barge in Ecuador. On a more positive side, the gang responsible for the increase in boardings/theft around the Singapore and Malacca Straits has been arrested, and events have abated. However, probably the most enduring challenge is that of human migrants seeking a better life out of Africa. A ‘new’ route has been identified off East Africa, north of the Mozambique Channel – seven events were recorded last month, alongside 8 human migrant events emanating from North Africa and 7 events from West Africa towards the Canary Islands.
