In this month’s roundup of global maritime security incidents, we report on the continuing humanitarian crisis posed by maritime migration as migrants are rescued in the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa. In the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the number of Houthi attacks on commercial shipping was greatly reduced in September with only two vessels reported to have been struck by Houthi aerial weapons. The crippled oil tanker MT SOUNION was towed to a safe area in the Red Sea as salvage operations continue in an attempt to avert an environmental disaster.
