Neptune focuses on two significant events for July’s Land Intelligence Report:
The withdrawal of UN peacekeepers from Mali, and the ongoing coup d’état in Niger. Although both events are largely bloodless for now, their background is a major cause for concern as this could be considered a failure of Western influence and counter-terrorism operations. Similarly, this could be viewed as a success for dictatorships as well as the Wagner Group, and by effect, the Russian state. The consequences of these events have the potential to reduce stability across an already fractured region.
How will the UN Withdrawal from Mali and the coup d’ état in Niger impact stability across the Sahel?
