KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Navy has formed a rapid deployment team with the cooperation of its Indonesian counterparts to curb sea crime, especially piracy, said Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar.
The RMN chief said a helicopter had been placed under the team at its base in Tanjung Pengelih, Johor, while the Indonesian navy had stationed its team on Batam Island, near Singapore.
He added that the team was formed on Aug 21 following the MT Joaquim oil tanker robbery on Aug 8.
It was the third tanker to be forcefully taken in the Straits of Malacca this year, after two cases on March 2 and Feb 15.
