Loaded tanker escapes attack off Nigerian coast

A group of pirates on Wednesday attempted to attack a heavily loaded tanker while the vessel was underway off the coast of Togo and Nigeria.

The criminals aboard a vessel with two skiffs reportedly chased the tanker for some 20 minutes and threatened the crew members in different ways hoping to halt the vessel movement.

The aborted attack came barely a month after a string of attacks in the Gulf of Guinea, as pirates attempted to board tanker vessels in the area.

Six attacks were recorded within 24 hours in April this year in Nigeria with two crew members of an offshore supply vessel kidnapped by pirates while their ship was underway around 97 nautical miles South-West of Brass.

According to a report by the World Maritime News on the Wednesday’s failed attack, the crew aboard the tanker conducted evasive manoeuvres at maximum speed, used water jet and fog horn, after which the pirates gave up their chase.
