The Puntland regional administration has wiped out pirate strongholds in Eyl, Garad and Bargal, Puntland Counter-Piracy Director Abdirizak Mohamed Dirir told Somalia’s Radio Ergo.
Dirir said some pirates have been arrested and some have fled the region, the radio station reported Tuesday (May 28th). Others, however, gave up piracy, and there are now reformed pirates in the armed forces and working with the Puntland government. Some former pirates also chose to return to school.
Mudug regional Governor Mohamed Yusuf Jama credited the region’s anti-piracy success to elders and religious leaders who have convinced many young men to abandon piracy and pursue legal means to earn a living.
