President asks parliament to approve 250 Ukrainian troops’ part in Ocean Shield and NavFor Atalanta operations

President Viktor Yanukovych has asked the parliament to approve the deployment of up to 250 Ukrainian troops to take part in the Ocean Shield and NavFor Atalanta operations.

In a draft bill tabled in parliament, the President suggests sending the Ukrainian Navy’s flagship – the fast frigate Hetman Sahaidachny, a helicopter, and a special-purpose group. The expenses are to be covered by the government. The national contingent involved in the Ocean Shield operation is supposed to be involved in patrolling marine areas, deactivating and counteracting pirate ships, and assisting civil ships if necessary. Other tasks will be active search for pirates and armed robbers at sea as well as protection of convoys of UN ships and vessels with humanitarian aid.
