Kuala Lumpur: Reports have emerged today of a double pirate strike with the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre in Malaysia detailing two pirate attacks that took place last week in Indonesia.
In what looks to have been a twin strike by the same group, six to seven pirates armed with knives boarded a tug around 3nm NE of Tanjung Berakit last Wednesday night at 11pm. They took all the crew members hostage and tied them up stealing their cash and personal belongings.
Just a few hours later pirates boarded a tug towing a barge 8nm NE of Tanjung Berakit, taking the crew members hostage, tying the crew members up and locking them in a cabin. They then stole crew and ship properties before escaping the vessel.
Only last week SeaShip News identified Indonesia as a worrying piracy hotspot with the number of incidents reported by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) jumping 50% in a six-month period. Read that articlehere. [30/07/13]
