Germany Continues Naval Presence

Subject to parliamentary approval the German government has said it intends to maintain a naval presence in the Gulf of Aden until May 2014.

German warships have patrolled the high risk area for four years in order to protect commercial shipping from pirate attacks.

A government spokesman has announced that the cabinet had decided to extend the deployment of the German navy until May next year, a presence which is deemed to have made the Gulf of Aden “significantly safer”.

In addition to 300 soldiers, Germany also provides the frigate Augsburg and a surveillance aircraft.
