Fifteen fishermen who along with two others went missing during an attack by pirates in their trawlers in the Bay of Bengal in Noakhali’s Hatiya Upazila early Monday were rescued on Wednesday night.
The two other fishermen – Zahir Uddin and Shah Newaz – were reportedly killed by the bandits. A team of Jahajmara Matsyajibi Samabaya Samity took the missing fishermen to the shore from the Bay around 7:45pm, local people said. At least 10 fishermen were injured, including seven with bullets, and 17 others went missing in a fierce attack on fishermen by a gang of armed robbers at dead of night on Monday.
The victims said they were returning ashore after fishing in the deep sea on three trawlers – ‘MV Mayer Doa-2’, ‘MV Jahid Hasan’ and ‘MV Runa’. The bandits beat up other fishermen mercilessly and looted cash and valuables, including nets, fish and mobile phones from the trawlers. 17 fishermen went missing in the attack.
Those who were rescued on Wednesday said the pirates hacked Zahir and Shah Newaz during the attack and threw them into the Bay. They could not be traced yet, according to UNB.
