Seychelles Transfers Nine Convicted Pirates to Puntland

The Seychelles government transferred nine convicted Somali pirates to the federal state of Puntland on Sunday (March 30th) to serve out the remainder of their jail terms, AFP reported.

“The prisoners will … serve out the remainder of their sentences at the newly built Garowe prison in Puntland,” a statement from the Seychelles Interior Ministry said.

One prisoner has just a year to go in jail, while others will remain behind bars until 2025.

The Seychelles has been accepting pirates for trial since 2010, and has transferred more than 90 convicted pirates to date, some to the federal state of Puntland and some to the Somaliland region.
