The French army released on Monday (January 20) video of the EU naval force arresting five suspected pirates who they believe are behind an attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden on Saturday (January 18).
The oil tanker issued a distress call to the UK Maritime Trade Operation (UKMTO) on Friday evening, reporting to be under attack, the French EU Naval Force said on their website.
According to the reports, the attack was repelled by a private armed security team which boarded the oil tanker.
The boat then headed to a vessel which lingered nearby.
On nearing the vessel, the helicopter crew and boarding team observed that people on board were throwing equipment over board, deepening suspicion that the small ship was the reported pirate mother-ship, according to the EU Navel Force website.
Once the EU naval team boarded the vessel, five suspected Somali pirates surrendered and were separated from the rest of the vessel’s crew and transferred to the naval force boat FS Siroco for further investigation.
