Associated Press reports that Spanish authorities have begun a piracy trial in Madrid. The defendants, six Somali nationals, are charged with piracy, weapon possession and membership of a criminal group and were arrested in January 2012 when they mistakenly attacked the ESPS Patino, a Spanish naval vessel which at the time was the EU NAVFOR flagship, believing it to be a merchant ship.
As spectacular mistakes go, it was a good one and ended up with all six being taken in to custody.
AP said that a Spanish National Court spokesman suggested the trial was expected to end on Wednesday.
