GAROWE, Somalia July 22, 2013 (Garowe Online) – Somalia‚Äôs Puntland Ministry of Security and DDR (Demobilization, Demilitarization and Reintegration) has launched a three-day training program in the capital city of Somalia‚Äôs Puntland region of Garowe on Monday, Garowe Online reports.
The training which brought together over 50 participants representing different departments of the ministry, security institutions, officials and local peace builders is aimed at strengthening peace and stability of the region, organizers said.
The opening event of the training program was attended by Puntland Vice President Gen. Abdisamad Ali Shire, Security Minister Khalif Isse Mudan, and UNDP officials who organized the training program.
Security Minister Mudan initially thanked UNDP for organizing the training and said that UNDP plays a vital role in improving Puntland security sector by helping the government with training of the police and the custodian corps.
Former head of UNDP Puntland Nick Beresford spoke at the opening event and said that UNDP previously pledged continued support including construction of prisons to Puntland government.
Puntland Vice President Shire who also spoke at the event noted that the government has been continuing an overall security sector reforms alongside security campaigns such as successful operations against terrorists and pirates.
“Puntland has many enemies and those enemies want to harm our peace and stability so that we need to be vigilant against them,” said Vice President Shire.
