KOTA KINABALU: Security forces have stepped up surveillance for suspected pirate movement around an oil and gas platform about 120km north-west of Labuan.

Though there have been no cases of piracy or other incidents, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Royal Malaysian Navy have stepped up aerial and sea patrols for any suspicious movements in the waters near an oil rig after the crew of the MV Armada Tuah supply boat said that they were being tailed by four speedboats with a mother boat seen in the background at 11am on Thursday.

However, the crew, who were on their way to Labuan after sending supplies to the oil rig, managed to speed away and immediately returned to the oil rig.
