Vessel Attacked – Gulf of Oman

Location: 20nm Northeast of Sohar, Oman 

Incident Details. UKMTO received a report of an incident 20nm northeast of Sohar, Oman. Local authorities have reported that a tanker has experienced a fire in its engine room and are on scene assisting with the evacuation of the crew. The vessel is reporting 1 casualty, and 2 crew members are missing. No environmental impact was reported. The authorities continue investigating.

Comment. Reports indicate the vessel involved in this incident is the Palau-flagged tanker SETTEBELLO. The cause of the engine room fire was not initially released, but the ship later reported that it had been struck by a missile. Unverified reports suggest the US military may be responsible for the attack. No further information has been received regarding the casualties.

Assessment. If confirmed, this incident is the second US strike in two days against vessels they assess are attempting to break the blockade on oil trade in Iranian ports. No official comment has yet been made by US military sources. The US has been conducting a blockade since 13 April 2026, and reports state that approximately 136 vessels have been intercepted since its inception, some by force. Vessels transiting the Gulf of Oman should maintain enhanced vigilance, apply BMP Maritime Security measures, and report suspicious activity to UKMTO.
