Tanker Attacked in the Gulf of Oman

Incident Details.UKMTO released an alert regarding an incident 21nm northeast of Sohar, Oman, involving a tanker that had reported a fire in the engine room. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) later confirmed that the ship was disabled by a US aircraft using two Hellfire missiles. The vessel involved in this incident is the Guinea-Bissau-flagged, Bitumen tanker JALVEER. The ship is reported to have a crew of 20 Indian seafarers on board. No information has been received regarding any casualties.

Comment. This is the third day in a row that the US military has carried out disabling action against tankers transiting the Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM stated the vessel was struck because it violated its blockade against Iran by attempting to transport Iranian oil products.

Assessment. The US Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) assesses the regional threat level for the Gulf of Oman as SEVERE, historical projectile/UAV strike patterns sustain the risk profile. Naval presence and enforcement activity remain elevated. Ships should maintain increased vigilance, apply BMP Maritime Security measures, and report suspicious activity to UKMTO.
