Global Security Risk Map – Q1 2026

In Africa, jihadist groups increased pressure on government positions in Mali and Burkina Faso, there was a failed coup in Benin and violent clashes continued in Sudan and Ethiopia. In Central and South America, the US increased pressure on sanctioned oil activity in Venezuela and carried out strikes on narcotics smuggling vessels. Gang warfare in Brazil, Cartel violence in Mexico and rising crime rates in Ecuador were key concerns. Military skirmishes continued along the Cambodia and Thailand border and in Myanmar and a terrorist related incident in Sydney, Australia hit the headlines. In the maritime domain there was some good news as the Houthis announced a cessation of attacks on commercial shipping but attacks on ships in the Black Sea increased.
