Incident Alert Update – Attack – Gulf of Guinea

INCIDENT ALERT UPDATE – ATTACK

Position: 0258N 00253E 208nm S of Lagos  
Location: GULF OF GUINEA

Incident details: The MDAT-GOG released a warning today regarding the attack and boarding of an MT 208nm South of Lagos Nigeria, the crew have reportedly taken shelter in the citadel and are safe.  A later update (0938UTC) stated that the pirates had left the vessel and a Nigerian patrol vessel was in attendance.

 

Intelligence Comments: This is the second incident this week in the approaches to the Nigerian EEZ Security Escort Vessel (SEV) rendezvous area, this particular incident highlights the importance of complying with BMP measures and the effectiveness of utilising a citadel to deny assailants control of a vessel and creation of a hostage situation.
