The joint military operations comprising the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Army have dislodged alleged armed criminal groups terrorising communities in Akwa Ibom State.

It was learnt that the groups also raped women, stole outboard engines, boats, fishing nets and cash. They were said to have crippled the economic activities in the areas.

Commander, NNS Jubilee, Ikot Abasi, David Adeniran, said on Wednesday that the groups had their hideouts on many islands accessible only through creeks in the Eastern Obolo and Ibeno local government areas.

He said intelligence reports revealed that most piracy attacks and other criminal activities in the local government areas were being initiated from the hideouts on the islands.
