Yemen and Italy, EU discuss enhancing Coastguard capacities

Interior Minister Abdul-Qader Qahtan met here on Monday with Italy’s ambassador to Yemen Luciano Galli and a representative of the Italian company implementing the marine radar network of the Yemeni Coastguard.

They discussed several issues concerning the implementation of the networking second phase of the Coastguard radar network. They also reviewed the achievements made to date in the first phase.

Qahtan praised the security cooperation relations between Yemen and Italy and its continuous support for Yemen.

Galli stressed his government’s adherence to continue to support Yemen, especially in the security field and the implementation of the second phase of the Coastguard radar network.

On the other hand, The Interior Minister held talks with Head of the European Union maritime capacity-building on several issues relating to the training of the Coastguard Authority’s personnel to improve their capacities in the fight against piracy, as well as in marine communications and rescue operations.

The Interior Minister reviewed the efforts undertaken by the Coastguard, training operations they have received and the training requirements they still need, valuing the EU firm support to Yemen, and its assistances to the security services in the country.

The EU official said that providing support to Yemen in training areas is of great importance in the process of building the capacity of the Yemeni Coastguard to combat piracy and conduct rescue operations due to Yemen’s vital and important location.
