The Nigerian Navy has said that it is committed to defending the Nigerian waterways as its constitutional role more than ever before and ensure regular patrol of the territorial waters.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Warri Naval Command, Rear Admiral Johnson Olutoyin, made these remark during the presentation of awards to both serving and the civilian staff of the NNS, Delta Naval Base, at the weekend.

Rear Adimiral Olutoyin said that the Nigerian Navy would not compromise in dealing with acts capable of derailing the nation’s economy such as illegal bunkering, sea piracy and vandalisation of pipelines.

The Naval base assured that hardworking staff of the base, who had distinguished themselves in their chosen endeavours, would be adequately rewarded and commended the Commander of the Base, Navy Commodore Mohammed Garba for instituting such a befitting award.

Admiral Olutoyin, on the occasion, which coincided with the Base’s Easter Family Day, enjoined both officers and ratings to avoid anything that would tarnish of the Nigerian Navy.

Commanding Officer of the Base, Navy Commodore Garba, stressed the need for greater performance in the maritime sector which, according to him, was one of the nation’s cardinal objectives.

Commodore Garba maintained that the maritime sector with abundant oil, gas, solid minerals deposits as well as marine life, was of strategic economic importance to the country.
