Vietnam-flagged tanker missing, feared hijacked

Media reports in South East Asia state that the Vietnamese tanker, MT Sunrise 689, has reportedly gone missing whilst en route to Vietnam and there are fears she may have been hijacked.

MT Sunrise 689 left Singapore on October 2nd and contact with her was lost shortly afterwards. The Vietnamese News Agency stated that she had been carrying a cargo of 5,226 tons of oil and a crew complement of 18.

The Singapore and Malacca Straits have seen a surge in tanker hijackings this year, something the region had been able to clamp down on up until 2014. If confirmed as a hijack, this would be the 13th tanker to have been taken by pirates this year.
