Report on the Deadly Ambush in Galkayo, 3 July 2013

Today there was a deadly ambush that led to casualties of civilians and policemen in Galkayo, capital of Mudug region, in Puntland State of Somalia.

Prior to this deadly ambush, the Registered Political Associations in Puntland were conducting peaceful rallies, and today Horseed Political Association conducted a public rally in Galkayo that began and ended in peace and order.

However, after the peaceful public rally concluded, an armed group ambushed Puntland Police Force driving in the middle of Galkayo. Two Puntland policemen and two male civilians were killed in the attack, while 15 persons were wounded consisting of civilians, policemen, and the attackers.

Puntland Government sends its condolences to the victims’ families and to the people of Galkayo, whom we all know opened their hearts in providing medical treatment to persons wounded in Kismayo fighting, June 28-30, 2013, that were transferred from Kismayo to Galkayo for medical assistance.

Puntland Government blames today’s deadly ambush on a number of individuals in Galkayo, who are previously known for working to create insecurity and public incitement, and this group of individuals is closely linked to piracy criminal gangs and political connections outside of Puntland.

Puntland Government shall take strong and appropriate step in accordance with the law, in order to strengthen peace and stability, and to bring to justice those who organized the deadly attack that led to the death of civilians and Puntland policemen.
