Nigeria: Sea Pirates Kill Policeman, Two Civilians in Bakassi

BY EYO CHARLES

Calabar — Police yesterday confirmed the killing of one Policeman and two civilians at the Ikang Jetty in Bakassi by sea pirates.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State command Hogan Bassey said in the early hours of yesterday, gunmen suspected to be pirates opened fire on a speed boat that was berthing at the Ikang jetty killing the border policeman and some civilians.

Bassey said investigations have commenced to uncover what provoked the killing.

He however said the attack may have been unprovoked, adding that they were on the trail of the criminals and assured that those involved would be brought to book soon. Eye witnesses said the attack may have been revenge to the Navy’s recent onslaught against some pirates along the Calabar waterways.

When news men visited the scene of the incident, some security men that did not want to be mentioned said they thought the men were fishermen or residents of the area.
