Nigeria: Sea pirates attack Ondewari community

Palpable fear gripped the people of Ondewari community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, as sea pirates, armed with sophisticated rifles, invaded the community and carted away two 75 horsepower speedboats and dispossessed people of their properties.

The sea pirates, it was learnt, has been operating on the waterways with the sole aim of maiming, killing, and robbing passengers boats.

An eyewitness account told the Nigerian Tribune that the pirates invaded the community at about 10:30pm and began to shot sporadically, as indigents of the community scamper for safety.

According to a source, the driver of the speedboat carted away at Amassoma, escaped by a whisker, as he jumped into the ocean when the sea pirates were advancing towards his direction.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Alex Akhigbe, said though the command was yet to be briefed, he was going to investigate the matter by contacting officers on duty in the area.
