NATO Commander Observes Police Training In Djibouti

During a recent port visit in Djibouti, Rear Admiral Antonio Natale, Commander of NATO’s counter piracy mission, Operation Ocean Shield met officials from the European Union’s Mission for Maritime Capacity Building, Eucap Nestor and discussed with them the current situation in the Horn of Africa.

He also had the opportunity to visit the Italian Carabinieri Training Centre where 200 Somali policemen attending the local Djibouti Police Academy were being trained, assisted by AMISOM instructors.

RAdm Natale saw practical demonstrations in riot management, arrests, escorts and critical situation management all of which could be used when the trainees return to Somalia.

Finally, RAdm Natale met the Training Mission Commander and the two staff teams were able to discuss topics such as training and the possibility of training support to the African, coastal states most affected by pirate activity.
