A Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer joined an international antipiracy task force on Tuesday in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said.

One of two destroyers Japan has sent to the region for antipiracy operations began participating in the Combined Task Force 151, a multinational antipiracy group comprising U.S. and British military forces and others, Onodera said at a press conference.

The Japanese vessel will patrol in assigned waters at designated hours.

“Cooperating with other countries, Japan will do its best to combat pirates,” the defense minister said.
