Maritime security incidents increased across the Gulf of Guinea, the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean during December. Of note, the Houthi’s only conducted one attack during December; while it was reported that Somali pirates demanded a $10m ransom for a Chinese fishing vessel and its crew that were seized off the Somali basin in November. Also of note, there were 5 major human migrant events in the Mediterranean and 2 off the Canary Islands. In total, 909 migrants were rescued and detained in those incidents.
