Port Facility Security Officer means the person designated as responsible for the development, implementation, revision, and maintenance of the port facility security plan and for liaison with the ship security officer and company security officers. ISPS compliant port owners/operators should ensure their employees at all management and operational levels receive accredited security training to ensure effective implementation of the PFSP.

In accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) criteria for PFSO under MSC,1/Circ.1188, May 2006 Model Course, the PFSO must be competent to achieve the following:
- Develop, maintain, and supervise the implementation of a Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP).
- Assess security risk, threat, and vulnerability.
- undertake regular inspections of the port facility to ensure that appropriate security measures are implemented and maintained.
- Ensure that security equipment and systems, if any, are properly operated, tested, and calibrated.
- Encourage security awareness and vigilance.
Delegates completing the UK PFSO course will be certified through UK Government, Department for Transport (DfT) for UK Maritime Security Division.
International Maritime Organisation (IMO) syllabus approved.
