President Goodluck Jonathan has urged the Nigerian Navy to come up with robust maritime security measures that would eradicate illegal fishing, piracy and other vices on the nation’s water-ways.
Jonathan who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defense, Alhaji  Aliyu Numan, spoke on Monday  during the  2014 Chief of Naval Staff annual conference   tagged, “Transforming for enhanced Nigerian Navy operational efficiency”  in Lokoja, the Kogi State
capital.
He said  the federal government will ensure that the Nigerian Navy is sufficiently equipped to enable it meet with global best practices, global strategic contest, and technological advancement  in line with current global security challenges.
He stated that a well equipped Navy was imperative to assist in his administration’s transformation agenda, which he added will help improve the nation’s economic fortune.
He lauded the Nigerian Navy for its fight against crude oil theft, bunkering and other unwholesome activities on the nation’s maritime territory.
He said it was a good development efforts of the Navy to maintain a robust fleet geared towards sustaining conducive maritime environment.
He also said that the indigenous infrastructural development the Navy had undergone recently was commendable and promised that his administration would ensure improvement in infrastructural development in the country.
