Iran Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, who is in Russia to attend International Maritime Defense Show (IMDS 2013), held talks with Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Viktor Viktorovich Chirkov in St. Petersburg on Sunday.
Sayyari and Chirkov discussed bilateral and regional cooperation, particularly ways to safeguard security of common and international waterways.
They called for holding joint maneuvers, Iranian and Russian warships visiting each other’s ports, and boosting educational and technical cooperation.
Sayyari also held meetings with his counterparts from Germany, Greece, Poland, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. The sides exchanged views on maritime issues, joint cooperation to enhance the security of international waterways, and fighting piracy and terrorism.
Iran and Russia are examining a plan to conduct a join naval exercise in the Caspian Sea in the next few months. The two countries conducted their first joint maneuvers in the Caspian Sea, involving about 30 vessels, in 2009.
The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water by area, and is variously classed as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledged sea.
