The Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has said the agency has evolved new security initiatives to effectively police Nigeria’s waters against pirates.
Dr. Peterside disclosed this yesterday when he led the management staff of NIMASA on a courtesy visit to the management of Media Trust Limited in Abuja.
He said in spite of the termination of the security contract with Global West, allegedly promoted by Tom Polo, the agency has been working with the Navy and other armed forces to protect the country’s territory on the high sea against criminals.
“We have rejigged our relationship with the Navy. The Navy, too, has stepped up its operations on our water ways. As a result, in the last one month, piracy activities have reduced on our water ways. The National Security Adviser has also stepped in, promoting a regional effort to tackle piracy. This is because pirates do not operate from Nigeria’s territorial waters alone. Sometimes they come from neighbouring countries, strike and go back. So a regional effort will be profitable,” he noted.
