The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has pledged to continue to enhance safety and security of the region’s waterways and has reaffirmed its role in anti-piracy efforts.
Andrew Tan, MPA chief executive and Singapore’s governor to the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery (ReCAAP) governing council, said in the last 10 years, ReCAAP has achieved significant progress as a regional centre for information sharing, and has played a critical role in promoting regional co-operation in combating piracy and armed robbery against ships.
“Singapore will continue to invest in efforts to enhance the safety and security of waterways in the region,” Tan said in a statement after the ReCAAP 10th Governing Council meeting. “MPA will continue safety broadcasts to ships transiting the Singapore Strait, strengthen inter-agency co-ordination for timely response to incidents, and bolster co-operation with regional governments and the international maritime community.”
