A maritime lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Mike Igbokwe, has vehemently reacted to claims by the Nigerian Navy that it arrested 84 vessels for illegal and maritime offences in 2014.
It was disclosed last week by the Navy that, ”after preliminary investigation, the vessels arrested for illegalities and maritime offences were handed over to the appropriate prosecuting agencies for further investigation and prosecution.”
But, in his prompt reaction to the assertions, Igbokwe challenged the Navy to reveal appropriate authorities to which it handed over the arrested vessels and persons for investigation and prosecution.
“The public is also interested in knowing what happened to those vessels and persons arrested and/or investigated. How many of them had been prosecuted and/or convicted after investigations and under which laws?”
