Pirates Have Not Gone Away

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has made clear and loud its assertion that Somali piracy remains a real and present danger to shipping, far from having withered away pirates are still operating.

Peter Hinchcliffe, ICS Secretary General speaking at an ICS seminar during Singapore maritime week said this is not the time for shipowners to be complacent or be assured of what he termed the “current tranquillity”.

After six years of many horrible raids piracy has gone especially quiet he added, but there are clear signs, according to the ICS that we are going to see a resurgence of piracy this month.

Far from having defeated piracy, what we have seen is a switch in pirate tactics in the past 12 months and this has seen vessels targeted more carefully or attacked while at anchor.
